Top 5 Books Of 2016

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Bookworm’s Fantasy! I hope you’re all well, and I hope you all had a brilliant Christmas. In today’s blog post, I thought I’d go over my Top 5 Books of 2016. I debated with myself on whether to post this or not – I only started blogging this year and only got into serious reading this year, and some of these books were mentioned in my first All-Time Favourite Books post. But since then, I’ve gained a lot of followers, and some new books have been added too! These aren’t books that have necessarily been released in 2016, but they are all books I read and loved in 2016. So, in no particular order, here are my Top 5 Books of 2016…

The Shock Of The Fall by Nathan Filer.

This is my FAVOURITE BOOK I read this year! I think it’s an absolutely outstanding book, and in my personal opinion it’s underrated. I don’t hear many people talking about this, and I WISH they would. It’s a brilliant exploration of Schizophrenia – a mental illness which I believe should be spoken about a lot more. Filer is an extremely talented writer, and it’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel. I urge everybody to go out and read this – I guarantee you’ll love it! I’m planning on re-reading this soon and will review it afterwards, so stay tuned for that!

The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins.

I know this book is hyped about a lot, and some people think it’s overrated. But personally, I absolutely love this book! It introduced me to the genre of Psychological Thrillers which is one of my favourite genres now, and I can’t thank Hawkins enough for doing that. This novel is absolutely brilliant and there’s a reason why it’s done so well! The characters in this novel are brilliantly portrayed, and I can’t wait to read Hawkins next book (due to be released next year). I recently saw the film of this and loved it also!

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

This is another book which has done really well, and there’s a reason for that! I don’t tend to read many Romances, but this is so much more than the average Romance. This story is unique and beautiful in so many ways, and I adored every second of reading this. It truly broke my heart and I shed many tears whilst reading this! Since reading this, I’ve read a few other of Moyes’s novels; but this is my favourite by a long shot. The film is very good also!

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven.

Most of you will have seen me talk about the fact that I don’t tend to read much YA Fiction. I personally feel that YA can be really hit or miss – but this was DEFINITELY a massive hit! I adore this book and it really spoke to me on a very personal level. It’s a brilliant exploration of mental illness and loss and love, and it made me cry so many tears. This book will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Room by Emma Donoghue.

This book is just INCREDIBLE! It completely changed my life. It’s such an epic, heart-warming story, and it truly blew me away. I love absolutely everything about this book, and I truly think that everybody should read it. This is another book that I hope to re-read and review next year, so look out for that. All I can say is that if you haven’t read this book yet, you NEED to! The film is pretty good too, but the book is way better in my opinion!

  1. I loved loved LOVED Me Before You, The Girl on the Train and All the Bright Places. But for me, Room is the standout on this list. It completely engrossed me – and freaked me out no end on a train into London.

  2. I have yet to write about my 2016 favorites but Me Before You needs to be there!! I also read Room and liked it, but it won’t be a favorite this year 😦
Unfortunately, I’m one of those people you mentioned that think The Girl on the Train is (a little bit) overrated, I liked it, it was very entertaining, but I don’t remember a lot of it and that probably means it’s not very memorable. I had read Gone Girl before and completely loved it – The Girl on the Train didn’t reach my expectations after that one. :/

    1. Yes! Ah fair enough. I can understand why people don’t like The Girl on the Train as much as I did – it is MASSIVELY overhyped, and I understand that sometimes that can take away from the enjoyment of the book, so that’s totally fair enough! I loved it because it literally introduced me to the whole Psychological Thriller genre which I now LOVE reading. I haven’t actually read Gone Girl- I feel like I definitely need to though!

  3. I loved all the books you’ve listed! Especially The Shock of the Fall, was so interested to read a book written by a mental health nurse. I agree it’s very underrated though! Great post.

    1. That’s great – we have very similar tastes then! Yes, finally somebody who loves TSotF as much as I do! I agree, the portrayal of schizophrenia is so well-informed and believable. Yes it definitely is, I want everybody to read it! Thanks so much 🙂

  4. Me Before You and The Girl on the Train are already on my reading list, but I’ll have to add these other books, they sound good. I especially think that The Shock of the Fall will be my kind of book, I’ll have to give it a read! 🙂
